Today’s quick tech tip…
Q&A: Can I enable a Chrome extension when I'm Incognito?
Question from Franklin: There are times when I use Chrome in Incognito mode and I've noticed that my extensions don't work when Incognito is enabled.
I have one extension that I really need to have working at all times. Is there a way to enable it even when the browser is in Incognito mode?
Rick's answer: Franklin, the short answer is yes, there is a very simple way to allow an extension to work even when you're using Chrome Incognito.
However, I feel the need to remind you that Chrome disables all extensions when you're browsing Incognito for a reason.
Most browser extensions collect various pieces of info about your computer and your browsing habits, some of which are fairly invasive of your privacy.
If you instruct Chrome to allow an extension to run in Incognito windows that extension will have all the privileges it has when running in a normal window.
That means the extension could very well compromise your privacy in ways that completely negate the benefits provided by Incognito browsing in the first place.
Now that we have that reminder out of the way, if you still want to allow an extension to run when you're using Chrome in Incognito mode, just follow the steps below:
1 - Launch Chrome and click the Customize and control icon (it looks like three vertical dots).
2 - Select More tools from the menu, then click Extensions.
3 - Find the extension in question and click the Details button.
4 - Toggle the "Allow in Incognito" setting to On (the slider should turn blue).
That's all there is to it. From now on when you open an Incognito window that extension should work the same way it does in a normal Chrome window.
