Today's Quick Tip....
Beware Windows 10 'S' Mode if you're shopping for a new laptop
Have you been shopping online for a budget Windows laptop lately? If so, there's something you need to be on the lookout for...
If you've been checking Amazon, Walmart and other online computer retailers you've no doubt seen a plethora of low-cost Windows 10 machines to choose from.
The problem is, some of the most inexpensive Windows laptops are running Windows 10 in 'S' Mode, and if you aren't careful that can pose a problem.
In a nutshell, Windows 10 running in S Mode is a scaled-down Windows 10 that's pretty limited in the things you can do with it. Here are a few examples:
1 - You won't be able to install just any program or app on the machine. If you can't install it from the Microsoft Store you're out of luck.
2 - Your default browser will always be Microsoft Edge because Windows 10 S won't allow you to change it.
3 - If you prefer to use Google, DuckDuckGo or some other search engine, you'll have to visit he site manually because Bing will insist on being the default search engine.
Of course S mode does have a few advantages (such as enhanced security), but I prefer Windows 10 Home, and so do most other Windows users.
If you buy a Windows 10 S machine and decide it isn't your cup of tea you'll have the option of switching it out of S mode into Windows 10 Home, but that's a one-way switch.
Once you go "Home" there's no going back to S mode, and many of these S mode machines are just too anemic to run Windows 10 Home very well.
Just a few things to keep in mind while you're doing your shopping.
